What is a Godparent?

The part of the godparent is to testify to the Catholic faith of the child together with the parents, to profess the Church’s faith in which the children are to be baptized. [General introduction to Christian Initiation 8-10 (RCIA)]

Requirements:

Must be a practicing Catholic with all sacraments of initiation. If married, must be married within the Catholic Church.
• Each child is required to have one or two Sponsors (if two, one of each sex)
• Godparents are appointed by the parents of the child
• Be 16 years of age or older
• Cannot be the father or mother
• Must submit a letter of good standing from their home parish

What is a Sponsor?

A sponsor accompanies any candidate seeking admission as a candidate. Sponsors are persons who have known and assisted the candidates and attend as witnesses to the candidates’ moral character, faith, and intention (RCIA, Introduction, 10-11).
